Top Things to Do in Lombok with Kids (2026): Beaches, Snorkeling & Easy Nature Adventures

The best things to do in Lombok with kids include snorkeling with sea turtles around the Gili Islands, relaxing on the calm beaches of South Lombok, visiting waterfalls like Tiu Kelep and Benang Stokel, and enjoying scenic nature and cultural stops across the island.

Together, these activities cover different parts of Lombok, from the tropical Gili Islands to the beaches of South Lombok and the mountain landscapes around Mount Rinjani.

What are the best family activities in Lombok with kids?

This guide covers the best things to do in Lombok with kids across the island. Lombok is a great destination for families who prefer outdoor experiences, quiet beaches and simple adventures over busy tourist attractions. Instead of theme parks and packed resorts, you’ll find wide sandy beaches, clear water for snorkeling, waterfalls in the jungle and scenic viewpoints that are easy to combine with travel days.

Families can snorkel with sea turtles around the Gili Islands, spend relaxed days on the calm beaches of South Lombok, visit impressive but accessible waterfalls in both North and Central Lombok, and enjoy short nature stops like Bukit Selong or rice fields near Tetebatu.

Some activities work perfectly with toddlers and short outings, such as beach days and snorkeling from the shore, while others like waterfall hikes or scenic mountain areas are better suited for older kids or families who enjoy half-day adventures.

Lombok is ideal for families who enjoy nature, space and slower travel days. If you’re looking for theme parks or large resorts, Bali may suit you better.

Our Favorite Things to Do in Lombok as a Family

Lombok is one of our favorite islands in Indonesia, and a place we’ve now visited twice with our children when they were just two and three years old. From calm beach days to snorkeling with sea turtles and jungle waterfalls, it turned out to be surprisingly doable with young kids.

What makes Lombok so special for families is the balance between easy and adventurous. Many days were slow and relaxed, but some moments definitely pushed us a little. Halfway to Tiu Kelep Waterfall, for example, we were laughing and wondering what we had gotten ourselves into, sweaty, muddy and carrying tired kids. In the end it was absolutely worth it, but it’s a good reminder that not every activity feels “easy” in the moment.

In this guide, we share the best things to do in Lombok with kids based on our own experiences, including what works well with toddlers and what’s better suited for older children.

Snorkeling with Sea Turtles in Lombok with Kids (Gili Islands)

Snorkeling with sea turtles around the Gili Islands is one of the most special experiences in Lombok for families. While turtles can be spotted in several areas around Lombok, sightings are most consistent around the Gilis, often in relatively shallow water.

Quick Facts: Snorkeling with Turtles in Lombok with Kids

  • 🐢 High chance of turtle sightings
  • 🌊 Calm, clear water in dry season
  • 👶 Works well with young kids (life vests)
  • ⏱️ Short and flexible experience
  • 📍 Best around Gili Air & Gili Trawangan
  • Easy option: private family snorkeling tour

Our experience snorkeling in Lombok with young kids

We went snorkeling around the Gili Islands with our three-year-old daughter, and it turned out to be surprisingly easy. Seeing sea turtles swimming just below the surface is something she still talks about, and easily one of the most memorable things to do in Lombok with kids.

Even though it was high season and there were other snorkelers around, there were moments where it felt like it was just us and the turtle in the water. Because the stops were short and the pace relaxed, it never felt overwhelming for her.

For us, it showed that snorkeling with turtles in Lombok is absolutely doable with young kids when you choose calm conditions and the right setup.

What’s the best way to snorkel with turtles in Lombok?

If you only have time for one special experience in Lombok with kids, this is the one we would prioritize.

While snorkeling from the beach is possible in some areas, currents, distance to the reef and boat traffic can make it less predictable with young children.

We personally preferred a short private snorkeling tour. The guide selected calm spots, adjusted the timing to our daughter’s energy level, and took us straight to known turtle areas instead of having to search ourselves. We’ve done this tour twice and saw multiple turtles both times.

Visiting the Gili Islands in Lombok with Kids

The Gili Islands are, without exaggeration, one of our kids’ favorite places in Indonesia. Car-free paths, calm beaches and clear water make them feel safe and easy, even with young children.

Quick Facts: Visiting the Gili Islands with Kids

  • 🚲 No cars or scooters (safe for cycling)
  • 🏖️ Calm beaches and clear water
  • 👶🏻 Suitable for all ages, including babies
  • 🐢 Excellent snorkeling from shore
  • 🛝 Small playgrounds and family-friendly cafés
  • 🚤 Easy boat connections from Lombok & Bali

Our experience visiting the Gilis with young kids

The Gilis quickly became our children’s favorite stop in Lombok. Snorkeling with turtles was a highlight, but so was simply riding bicycles around the island, playing on the beach at sunset, and visiting small playgrounds along the way.

Because there’s no traffic, it feels relaxed rather than chaotic. Our kids loved the freedom of cycling everywhere, and we loved how compact everything is.

For us, the Gili Islands are an absolute must when visiting Lombok with kids. If your kids love freedom to move, cycle and explore safely, the Gili Islands are one of the easiest places in Indonesia to travel with children.

How to get to the Gili Islands

From Lombok, you can reach the islands by public boat or private transfer from Bangsal Harbour. From Bali, daily fast boats connect directly to the Gilis.

If you’re traveling between Bali and Lombok with children and want a full overview of routes, travel times and what works best for families, read our detailed How to Get from Bali to Lombok with Kids guide.

During high season, we recommend booking your boat tickets in advance to avoid waiting at the harbor.

Secret Gili Islands in East Lombok with Kids (Gili Kapal & Gili Kondo)

If you’re looking for one of the best tropical things to do in Lombok with kids, the Secret Gili Islands in East Lombok are hard to beat. Think white sandbanks, shallow turquoise water and tiny islands that feel almost Maldives-like.

These small islands, including Gili Kapal and Gili Kondo, are far quieter than the main Gili Islands and perfect for a relaxed half-day or day trip with kids.

Quick Facts: Secret Gili Islands (East Lombok)

  • 🏝️ Some of the most beautiful beaches in Lombok
  • 🌊 Crystal-clear, shallow turquoise water
  • 👶 Suitable for toddlers and older kids
  • 🐠 Easy snorkeling in calm conditions
  • 🚤 Best visited by organized boat tour
  • Easy option: family-friendly Secret Gili tour

Our experience visiting the Secret Gilis with kids

The first time we stepped onto one of these small islands, it honestly felt unreal. The sandbanks are wide and shallow, which made it easy for our kids to play near the water without strong waves.

If you’re choosing between East and Southwest Secret Gilis and only want one tropical island highlight, this is the most visually spectacular option.

Unlike the main Gilis, this side of Lombok feels much more untouched and simple. There are very few facilities, little shade and limited food options. That’s part of the charm, but it does mean you should come prepared.

For beach lovers, this is easily one of the most spectacular things to do in Lombok with kids.

👉 Check Secret Gili day tours from Lombok

How to visit the Secret Gili Islands

The most convenient way to visit the Secret Gili Islands is by joining an organized boat tour from East Lombok. Staying in the area makes the day much easier and shorter, especially with kids.

If you plan to base yourself nearby, we recommend staying in East Lombok and visiting the islands from there. On our trip, we stayed at Bidara Cottage, a small and family-friendly place that worked really well for exploring this side of Lombok.

It’s also possible to visit the Secret Gilis from other parts of Lombok, but keep in mind that coming from South Lombok or Senggigi makes it a long day with early departures and extra travel time.

For families, an organized tour removes a lot of stress. Transport to the harbor, boat arrangements and timing are handled for you, which keeps the day relaxed and predictable.

Secret Gili Islands in Southwest Lombok with Kids (Gili Asahan & Gili Nanggu)

The Secret Gili Islands in Southwest Lombok are a great middle ground between the main Gili Islands and the quieter Secret Gilis in the east.

Islands like Gili Asahan, Gili Gede, and Gili Nanggu offer a tropical island setting with clear water and white sand, but without the busier atmosphere of Gili Trawangan. If you’re looking for a beautiful island stay with a resort-style feel, this side of Lombok is worth considering.

Quick Facts: Secret Gili Islands (Southwest Lombok)

  • 🏝️ Tropical island stay without heavy crowds
  • 🌊 Clear water and calm beaches
  • 👶 Suitable for toddlers and older kids
  • 🐠 Good snorkeling from shore
  • 🛏️ Ideal for overnight stays
  • 🚤 Accessible via organized transfer or tour

Our experience with kids in Southwest Lombok

What we liked most about this side of Lombok is the balance between comfort and island scenery. It feels more developed than the Secret Gilis in the east, but still much calmer than the main Gili Islands.

With kids, staying overnight makes a big difference. Instead of rushing through a short visit, you can swim, snorkel and relax at your own pace. The beaches are generally calm, and the small scale of the islands keeps everything manageable.

For families who want a tropical island experience without the busier vibe of the main Gilis, this is a very appealing option.

How to visit the Secret Gili Islands (Southwest)

You can either stay overnight on one of the islands or arrange a day trip from Southwest Lombok.

If you’re planning your route and wondering where to base yourself, see our full Where to Stay in Lombok with Kids guide for area comparisons.

Organized transfers or tours make the logistics much easier, especially if you’re not staying directly in the southwest.

Beaches in South Lombok with Kids (Kuta, Selong Belanak & Nearby)

South Lombok has some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, making it a highlight for families. From wide sandy bays ideal for toddlers to classic beach-hopping around Kuta, this area offers plenty of variety and space to explore.

Whether you’re based in Kuta or nearby, you’ll find beaches that are great for swimming, relaxing and even easy surf lessons, all within short distances from each other.

Quick Facts: Beaches in South Lombok with Kids

  • 🏖️ Wide sandy beaches with plenty of space
  • 🌊 Generally calm, turquoise water for swimming
  • 👶 Suitable for babies, toddlers and older kids
  • 🏄 Beginner surf lessons at Selong Belanak
  • 📍 Easy beach-hopping around Kuta Lombok

Our experience beach hopping in South Lombok

South Lombok felt like the easiest place to slow down with kids. There are many beautiful beaches close to each other, including Selong Belanak, Kuta Beach, Tanjung Aan, Mawun and Geger.

Our clear favorite was Selong Belanak. The water is shallow, the sandy bottom is soft, and the curved bay keeps things manageable with young children. We rented beach beds, found shade easily and had lunch at Laut Biru right on the sand. It’s simple, relaxed and very family friendly.

Kuta Beach is lively and convenient if you stay in town. Mawun and Geger are quieter and scenic. Tanjung Aan is still stunning, but parts of the beach have changed with new development, so the vibe and facilities are different from a few years ago.

For families, Selong Belanak remains the most comfortable and predictable beach experience.

Surf lessons at Selong Belanak for Kids

Selong Belanak is also one of the best places on Lombok to try beginner surf lessons. The waves are gentle and break closer to shore, which makes it popular with families and first-time surfers.

Our kids were still too young, but we saw many children taking lessons in calm conditions.

👉 Book beginner surf lessons at Selong Belanak here

Visiting Waterfalls in Lombok with Kids (Benang Stokel & Tiu Kelep)

Visiting waterfalls is one of the most memorable things to do in Lombok with kids if you want to explore the island beyond the beaches. If you’re looking for a break from beach days, Lombok offers beautiful jungle waterfalls in both Central and North Lombok.

The two most family-relevant options are Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu in Central Lombok, and Sendang Gile with Tiu Kelep near Mount Rinjani in the north.

Quick Facts: Waterfalls in Lombok with Kids

  • 🌿 Benang Stokel & Kelambu: easier access
  • 🌊 Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep: more adventurous
  • 👶 Possible with kids, but expect walking
  • 🥾 Good shoes are essential
  • 🚗 Best visited by organized tour or private driver

Benang Stokel & Benang Kelambu with Kids (Central Lombok)

These waterfalls are generally the easier option with kids. The paths are shorter and less demanding, making them a good choice if you want a jungle experience without a long hike.

They work well as a half-day trip and can easily be combined with beach time in South Lombok.

👉 Book a Benang Stokel & Kelambu waterfall tour here

If you’re visiting waterfalls in Lombok with young children, bring a comfortable baby carrier. Trails can be uneven, muddy and slippery, especially near Tiu Kelep. A stroller is not practical here.

We personally use a Tula carrier and found it much more comfortable than carrying a toddler by hand on longer jungle walks.

If you’re planning more active days in Southeast Asia, you can also check our full Best Travel Gear for Kids in Asia guide for what worked best for us.

Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep with Kids (North Lombok)

This is the more adventurous waterfall experience. We visited with our children aged two and three, and while it was absolutely doable, it was also physically demanding.

The trail includes uneven paths, river crossings and a longer walk through the jungle. At one point we genuinely wondered what we had signed up for, but reaching Tiu Kelep at the end made it completely worth it.

If your kids enjoy a bit of adventure and you’re comfortable with hiking-style walks, these are the most impressive waterfalls in Lombok.

Visiting Bukit Selong with Kids (Sembalun Viewpoint)

Bukit Selong is one of the most scenic viewpoints in Lombok, overlooking the colorful rice fields of Sembalun near Mount Rinjani. It’s a relatively short but steep walk up to the top, where you’re rewarded with wide valley views.

It’s not a full-day activity on its own, but it works very well as part of a northern Lombok day trip. If your family enjoys active outdoor days rather than just beach time, this is one of the most rewarding inland experiences in Lombok.

Quick Facts: Bukit Selong with Kids

  • ⛰️ Short but steep and sometimes slippery climb
  • 🌾 Panoramic views over the Sembalun rice fields
  • 👶 Best with toddlers and older kids (carry if needed)
  • 🚗 Close to Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep waterfalls
  • 📸 Quick but impressive scenic stop
  • 🔁 Easy to combine with North Lombok waterfalls in one tour

Our experience visiting Bukit Selong with kids

We combined Bukit Selong with the waterfalls in North Lombok. After the longer jungle walk to Tiu Kelep, this viewpoint felt like a scenic bonus stop.

The climb is short but quite steep, so carrying young children may be necessary. When we arrived, our kids were actually asleep in the car after the waterfall hike, which tells you something about how full that day was.

Even so, the view over Sembalun is beautiful and gives a completely different landscape compared to the beaches.

How to visit Bukit Selong with kids

You can visit Bukit Selong independently if you have your own driver, but it’s most practical to combine it with a North Lombok day tour.

Many organized tours combine:

• Sendang Gile
• Tiu Kelep
• Bukit Selong

This saves time and keeps the day structured.

Visiting Tetebatu with Kids (Rice Fields & Village Life)

Tetebatu is a quiet village on the slopes of Mount Rinjani, known for its rice fields and slower pace of life. If you’re looking for a break from beaches and boat trips, this is one of the most peaceful things to do in Lombok with kids.

It’s less about attractions and more about walking through nature, spotting monkeys near the forest edge and enjoying local village life.

Quick Facts: Tetebatu with Kids

  • 🌾 Green rice fields and rural scenery
  • 🚶 Easy walks through ricefields
  • 👶 Suitable for toddlers and older kids
  • 🐒 Chance to see monkeys near the forest
  • 🌄 Cooler climate than the coast
  • Easy option: organized Tetebatu tour

What to expect in Tetebatu

Tetebatu is a quiet village surrounded by rice fields on the slopes of Mount Rinjani. It’s a peaceful stop that offers a different side of Lombok compared to beaches and island tours.

Families usually come here for simple walks through rice fields, light jungle paths and a slower rhythm.. The cooler air and open landscape can be a welcome change after coastal heat.

It’s not packed with attractions, but that’s exactly the appeal.

How to visit Tetebatu

You don’t necessarily have to stay overnight in Tetebatu. Many families visit as part of a longer route across Lombok.

It works especially well as a stop between South Lombok and East Lombok, as outlined in our 2-Week Lombok Itinerary with Kids, where we show how to structure the island step by step.

👉 Book a Tetebatu rice field and village tour here

If you prefer a slower experience, you can also stay one night in the village to enjoy the cooler mountain setting.

Visiting a Sasak Village with Kids in Lombok

Visiting a traditional Sasak village is one of the more cultural things to do in Lombok with kids. The Sasak are the indigenous people of Lombok, and in several villages you can still see traditional houses, weaving demonstrations and local daily life.

Two of the most visited villages are Sade and Ende, both located in South Lombok near Kuta.

Quick Facts: Sasak Village with Kids

  • 🏡 Traditional Sasak houses and village layout
  • 🧵 Handwoven textiles and local crafts
  • ⏱️ Short visit, usually 30 to 60 minutes
  • 👶 Easy stop with toddlers and older kids
  • 📍 Often combined with South Lombok day tours

What to expect when visiting

A visit to a Sasak village is usually straightforward and relatively short. You walk through the village with a local guide, learn about traditional architecture and daily customs, and see how textiles are woven by hand.

With kids, it works best as a brief cultural stop rather than a long activity. The villages are compact and easy to walk through, making them manageable even with younger children.

It’s not an essential highlight for every family, but it does add cultural context to your Lombok trip beyond beaches and waterfalls.

Are There Playgrounds in Lombok for Kids?

Lombok is not known for large public playgrounds or indoor play centers. Most family activities revolve around beaches, nature and outdoor experiences rather than structured play areas.

That said, there are a few small playgrounds and kid-friendly spots around the island:

  • 🛝 The Play Cafe (Gili Air) – A relaxed café with a dedicated play area, great for a break from the beach.
  • 🏨 Jambuluwuk Resort (Gili Trawangan) – Has a small playground on-site for guests.
  • 🎠 Play Zone Lombok (Mataram area) – An indoor play space, useful on hot or rainy days.
  • 🌴 Lantis (Selong Belanak) – A family-friendly café with space for kids to play.
  • The Well (Kuta Lombok) – Community-focused café with a small play-friendly setting.

These are mostly small and simple setups rather than large playgrounds, but they can be helpful for a short break.

If your children enjoy sand, water and outdoor freedom, Lombok itself becomes the playground.
