The Gili Islands are one of those places we keep coming back to. We’ve now visited twice with our kids, and every time it feels like stepping into a slower, simpler rhythm of island life.
For our children, the Gilis are honestly one of their favorite places in Indonesia. Days here are wonderfully simple. They love cycling around the island, stopping at small playgrounds, and jumping into the sea whenever a beach looks inviting.
Snorkeling is another highlight. Spotting sea turtles in the clear water just off the beach quickly became one of those travel moments our kids still talk about at home. Add calm beaches, short distances, and the car-free island setup, and it’s easy to see why the Gilis work so well with children.
In this guide, we’ll share which island we think works best for families and the hotels that make staying on the Gili Islands with kids easy and enjoyable.

Gili Air is often considered the best Gili island for families visiting with kids. Island life here feels easy and relaxed: there’s no traffic, distances are short and most places can be reached within a few minutes by bike.
Snorkeling is another big highlight. In several spots around the island you can simply walk into the sea and start exploring the reef, and spotting turtles not far from the shore is quite common.

Gili Trawangan is the largest and most developed of the three Gili Islands. While it’s often known for nightlife, many parts of the island are surprisingly relaxed and work well for families visiting with kids.
What makes Gili T especially convenient is the variety of restaurants, cafés and hotels. If you like having plenty of choices for dinner, activities or day trips, this island offers the most options of the three.

Quick Facts: Staying on Gili Trawangan with kids
- 👨👩👧 Best for: families who want lots of restaurants and activities
- 🎉 Atmosphere: lively near the harbor, quieter elsewhere
- 🚲 Getting around: cycling around the island in about 30 minutes

Why families love staying on Gili Trawangan
Even though Gili Trawangan has a reputation for nightlife, most of the busy bars are concentrated around the southern harbor area. Once you cycle a little further north or inland, the island quickly becomes quieter and surprisingly family-friendly. If you’d like to learn more about the differences between the islands, read our full Gili Islands with Kids travel guide.
One thing our kids especially loved here were the small playgrounds scattered across the island. In the late afternoon we often hopped on our bikes and cycled around looking for playgrounds before dinner, which quickly became part of our daily routine.
With plenty of cafés, restaurants and beach spots along the way, those little bike rides often turned into relaxed family evenings around the island.
Best areas to stay on Gili Trawangan
The southern harbor area is the busiest part of the island, with many restaurants, dive shops and boat departures. It’s very convenient, but it can feel a bit lively in the evenings.
We personally prefer staying just outside the busy harbor area on the southeast side of the island. It keeps restaurants and cafés within easy cycling distance while feeling a little calmer than the main harbor area.
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, the north and northwest side of the island are great options. These areas are known for their relaxed vibe, beautiful beaches and stunning sunset views.
