Phuket is perfect to start your 2 week family trip because everything is close together. You can recover from the flight, settle the kids into a routine, and enjoy relaxed beach days. Travel times to your next destinations, Koh Yao Noi, Ao Nang, and Khao Lak, are short, keeping the itinerary easy and stress-free. Phuket sometimes gets a mixed reputation because of mass tourism, but we actually loved it. Kamala felt calm, friendly and perfect for kids, and it was such a nice place to start our trip.

Koh Yao Noi is a quiet and peaceful island, perfect for families looking to slow down after Phuket. Beaches are calm, resorts are family-friendly, and travel from Phuket is short and easy. Most families spend 3 nights here to enjoy relaxing beach days and gentle island exploration.

Koh Yao Noi is ideal to take it slow and recharge. You can enjoy calm mornings on the beach, short boat trips, and gentle family activities. Even a short stay gives enough time to explore the island at a relaxed pace.

Koh Yao Noi is mostly about relaxing and enjoying the nature and beaches.

The island is small, so everything is relatively close by. Just pick the hotel that suits you best, you’re mainly here to relax. These are our favorite hotels:

• Awana Villa Resort Yaonoi: Spacious villas set around a lagoon and gardens, ideal for families wanting comfort and a calm poolside atmosphere.
• Koh Yao Seaview Bungalow: Simple beachfront bungalows with sea views and easy access to the sand, perfect for relaxed days and beach walks.
• Sabai Corner Bungalows: Rustic, budget‑friendly bungalows steps away from the beach for a laid‑back, no‑frills island experience.

• 👶 Babies and toddlers: Calm beaches make it easy to relax. Bring a carrier for village walks. Baby essentials are limited on the island, so bring diapers, wipes, and any baby food you need from Phuket. Check out our absolute favorite baby carrier from Tula.

Some families might consider visiting the Phi Phi Islands instead of Koh Yao Noi. We didn’t choose this option because we booked late and there were very few hotels left with baby cots. It can also get quite busy, especially around Christmas.

We opted for a relaxing hotel and quiet island life in Koh Yao Noi. That said, in terms of beaches and nature, Phi Phi and nearby Maya Bay are stunning, so it’s worth considering. For families with older kids (4+), Phi Phi might actually be the better choice for a more adventurous island experience.

Ao Nang (Krabi) is the perfect mid-point for a 2-week Thailand itinerary with kids. Its beaches, family-friendly hotels, and easy access to boat tours make it ideal for both relaxation and adventure. We advise to spend 4 nights here to enjoy the mix of activities and beach time.

Ao Nang works well as a central base for families because it’s close to restaurants, boat piers, and beaches. You can enjoy short travel times to Railay, the Four Islands, and other nearby attractions without exhausting kids. Even with a short stay, Ao Nang offers beaches, viewpoints, and easy excursions suitable for babies, toddlers, and older kids. Ao Nang has plenty of activities, mostly focused on beaches, and they are absolutely beautiful. Our favourite was Railay Beach, super easy to reach and perfect for kids to play. Ao Nang can be combined with Noppharat Thara Beach, but we recommend staying in Ao Nang town when traveling with children. It’s closer to restaurants, shops, and boat departures, which makes day planning much easier with kids. Khao Lak is perfect for families who want a slower pace after several days of island hopping. Short travel times between accommodations, beaches, and excursions make it easy for parents and children alike. Khao Lak offers lots of different activities, although places like Khao Sok and the Similan Islands are long day trips. Our kids especially loved the bamboo rafting, even the snake we spotted along the way 😱.

If your international flight arrives in Bangkok (like most), it makes total sense to start your Thailand trip here as a family. We recommend staying at least 3 nights, not only to recover from the flight and time difference, but also because Bangkok has more than enough fun things to do with kids.

Bangkok is exciting, colorful and surprisingly kid-friendly: indoor play areas, boat rides on the river, child-friendly malls, aquariums and easy cultural sights. With a pool hotel, your days stay relaxed and fun; explore in the morning, swim in the afternoon.

If you start your 2-week Thailand itinerary with kids in Bangkok, it usually works best to skip Koh Yao Noi.
The schedule becomes too rushed if you add all destinations, so either of these would be the suggested route:

• Bangkok → Phuket → Khao Lak → Ao Nang (Krabi)
• Bangkok → Ao Nang (Krabi) → Khao Lak → Phuket

Both routes work equally well, just pick the order that fits your hotel availability and flight deals.

If you’re planning your 2-week Thailand family trip in July or August, the weather can be very different from winter months. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go, you just need to pick the right side of Thailand. In summer (July & August), the better weather is usually in the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Phuket, Krabi, Ao Nang and Khao Lak can have more rain and waves during this time.

We did this with a 1 and a 3 year old, and it was absolutely doable. You can find diapers, wipes, formula and snacks locally in bigger destinations like Phuket and Ao Nang, but availability varies a bit on small islands. Packing some comfort-items from home keeps things relaxed.

Helpful gear to bring:

Thailand is honestly one of the easiest and most rewarding destinations to explore as a family. The travel days are manageable, the beaches are safe for little ones, and almost every hotel and restaurant is used to welcoming kids, it just makes everything feel relaxed instead of stressful.

What we loved most about this itinerary is the balance: beach time, pool days, nature, cute towns to explore, and a few bucket-list island trips without long travel days. Each stop has its own vibe, so the trip stays fun and fresh for both parents and kids.
