Ao Nang & Krabi with Kids: Family Fun, Easy Island Trips & Beautiful Beaches

Planning a family trip to Krabi with kids? This guide covers the best things to do in Krabi, where to stay with children, and how to explore beautiful places like Railay Beach and the nearby islands. Most families stay in Ao Nang, the main beach town of Krabi, because itโ€™s an easy base for island trips, beaches, and family-friendly restaurants.

Is Krabi a good destination for families with kids?

Yes, Krabi is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Southern Thailand. Most families stay in Ao Nang, where the beach is calm, the town is compact, and longtail boats leave for nearby islands like Railay and the Four Islands. Youโ€™ll find plenty of family hotels, restaurants with kidsโ€™ menus, and day trips that work even for young children.
Keep in mind that traffic in the main street can get busy, especially in the late afternoon and evening, so keep an eye on little ones when walking around town.

If you’re mainly looking for activities, our complete guide to the best things to do in Krabi with kids covers the top island tours, beaches, and family day trips in more detail.

Whatโ€™s the difference between Krabi and Ao Nang?

This can be a bit confusing when planning your family trip to Thailand. Krabi is the province, while Krabi Town is an inland city without beaches. Itโ€™s fine for a quick stop or local market visit, but most families stay in Ao Nang, the main beach area of Krabi Province.

Ao Nang is where youโ€™ll find family-friendly hotels, seaside restaurants, and longtail boats to Railay Beach and nearby islands. So when people say theyโ€™re visiting Krabi with kids, they usually mean Ao Nang or Railay, the real beach spots of Krabi. Because of this, Ao Nang is usually the best base when visiting Krabi with kids.

Our Experience in Ao Nang with Kids

We spent a few days in Ao Nang with our kids after visiting Phuket and Koh Yao Noi, and it was one of the easiest stops on our Thailand trip, all part of our 2-week Thailand itinerary with kids. The beach in Ao Nang isnโ€™t the most beautiful, but the nearby islands and Railay are absolutely stunning. Want to know more about Phuket? Check our Phuket with Kids Travel Guide.

The town can be busy, yet it still feels relaxed. We loved the mix of beach bars, family-friendly restaurants, and easy day trips. Our mornings started early (thanks to the kids), followed by a boat ride or island tour. After nap time we enjoyed quiet pool moments and dinner in town.

If youโ€™re planning your own Thailand with kids itinerary, Ao Nang is a great place to include for a mix of comfort and adventure. For the best beaches, island tours, and family activities, check our top things to do in Krabi with kids guide.

From calm beaches to island adventures, Krabi offers plenty of easy day trips for families, and most of them are easiest to reach from Ao Nang. Hereโ€™s a quick overview of our favorite things to do in Krabi with kids before we dive into the details.

All of these can be done from Ao Nang, and most are easy even with young children. Hereโ€™s what we loved most about each place, plus a few honest tips from our own trip. 1.1 ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Railay Beach with Kids

One of the most beautiful beaches near Ao Nang and perfect for families with young kids. The water is calm, the sand is soft, and the scenery is just stunning. Longtail boats run frequently between Ao Nang and Railay, especially in high season. As soon as one boat fills up, it leaves, so you never wait long.
A return ticket costs about 200 THB per person (around $5 USD / โ‚ฌ4.60).

1.2 ๐Ÿ๏ธ Four Islands Tour with Children

This is one of the classic Krabi day trips and still one of our favorites. Youโ€™ll visit beautiful islands like Koh Poda and Chicken Island, with turquoise water and great snorkeling spots. The ride is longer than to Railay but totally worth it.

You can join a group tour for great value, or book a private longtail like we did if you want more flexibility with timing and stops. This is especially handy for little ones who need naps or snack breaks.

1.3 ๐Ÿ๏ธ Hong Island Day Trip for Families

Hong Island, Koh Lao Lading, Pakbia Island, and the Hong Lagoon are a bit farther away than the Four Islands, but the beaches and lagoons are absolutely breathtaking. It can get busy, especially in high season, so go early. The boat ride is a bit long, but the views make up for it.

If you are traveling with kids and want more flexibility and donโ€™t want to depend on fixed tour schedules, consider booking a private tour or a speedboat.

1.4 ๐ŸŒ™ Krabi Night Market with Kids

A fun evening outing thatโ€™s easy even with young children. The market in Krabi Town has local food stalls, souvenirs, and live music. Itโ€™s a great way to try Thai street food in a lively yet relaxed setting.

Go early so the kids donโ€™t get too tired, and bring small cash for snacks and treats.

1.5 ๐Ÿ… Emerald Pool, Hot Springs & Tiger Cave Temple for Older Children

This is one of the most popular Krabi day trips, combining jungle pools, warm springs, and a temple climb. The Emerald Pool and Hot Springs are wonderful for kids who love water, but the day can feel long. Tours often last 8โ€“9 hours.

The Tiger Cave Temple involves a steep climb with hundreds of steps, which is not ideal for small children. We recommend this trip mainly for families with older kids (8+).

1.6 ๐Ÿ๏ธ Phi Phi & Maya Bay Day Trip (Optional for Families)

This is one of Thailandโ€™s most famous tours and for good reason. The scenery around Phi Phi and Maya Bay is unreal. We didnโ€™t do it with our kids because of the long travel time, but we would love to visit in the future, perhaps when staying on Phi Phi itself.

1.7 โš ๏ธ A Note on Island Tours with Kids

There are many combinations of island trips in Krabi: Hong, Koh Poda, Phi Phi, Maya Bay, and more. It is tempting to try all Krabi family day trips and squeeze as much into a single day as possible, but we do not recommend overdoing it. Some tours spend more time on the boat than on the islands, which can be tiring for kids.

Do not skip Railay Beach, it is so easy to reach from Ao Nang and absolutely beautiful. With young children, if you want to do two beach-focused days, we would personally spend one day at Railay and one day on the Four Islands with a private tour. Of course, for older children, it is no problem to do the longer tours.

If possible, spread out your day trips and mix them with relaxed beach or pool days. This makes the experience much more enjoyable for everyone.

2. Where to Stay in Krabi with Kids (Ao Nang as the Main Base)

Looking for the best family hotels in Krabi? Most families choose to stay in Ao Nang, the main beach town of Krabi, because itโ€™s close to restaurants, beaches, and the longtail boats that leave for nearby islands. Hereโ€™s a quick overview of the most family-friendly areas and places to stay.

Ao Nang offers plenty of family-friendly places to stay, from simple hotels and cozy guesthouses to private villas with their own pool. Youโ€™ll also find larger resorts with slides and kidsโ€™ areas, which are perfect if you want to relax while the little ones play.

If you like it calm and peaceful, Noppharat Thara Beach is a lovely choice. Itโ€™s quieter than central Ao Nang, and longtail boats also depart from here. Just keep in mind that because itโ€™s less busy, it can take a bit longer for boats to fill up before leaving.

We personally chose to stay near Ao Nang Beach. Itโ€™s a bit livelier but still relaxed, and youโ€™re closer to restaurants, supermarkets and small shops. With young kids, we found that extra convenience really makes a difference.

If youโ€™re deciding where exactly to stay, our where to stay in Krabi with kids guide breaks down the best areas and family-friendly hotels in much more detail.

3. Krabi with a Baby or Toddler

Ao Nang is one of the easiest places to stay in Krabi when traveling with a baby or toddler, and many families find Krabi with a baby surprisingly easy to navigate.

3.1 Getting Around Ao Nang with a Baby or Toddler

Ao Nang is easy to explore on foot. The main streets are flat and stroller-friendly, so we used our stroller most of the time. If you plan to take a longtail boat, a baby carrier (like our favorite ๐Ÿ‘‰ Tula Carrier) is much more practical.

3.2 Baby Supplies and Formula in Ao Nang

You really donโ€™t need to pack too much. Diapers and wipes are easy to find in local supermarkets and 7-Eleven stores. You can also find some baby food and formula, although brands might differ. If you prefer your usual brand, bring it from home just to be sure.

3.3 Family-Friendly Restaurants in Ao Nang

Most restaurants in Ao Nang are very child-friendly. Youโ€™ll find baby chairs almost everywhere and many places have kidsโ€™ menus with rice, noodles, and fruit smoothies. We found dining out with our kids super easy here.

3.4 Hotels and Baby Cots in Ao Nang

Most hotels provide baby cots or toddler beds on request. We always mention it when booking, and never had an issue. We did bring a portable baby travel cot for other destinations in Thailand, but in Ao Nang we didnโ€™t need it at all.

3.5 Island Tours from Ao Nang with a Baby or Toddler

Most day trips are doable even with a baby, especially if you choose a private longtail tour. This way you can adjust the timing to naps or snack breaks. Keep in mind that life jackets for babies are not always available, so bring your own if you feel more comfortable. We didnโ€™t find it necessary, but our toddler wore floaties on the boat just in case.

3.6 Final Thoughts on Visiting Krabi with a Baby

We found Ao Nang with a baby and toddler very manageable and relaxed. Everything you need is close by, locals are friendly, and activities are flexible enough to fit around nap times. Krabi is definitely one of the easiest places in Thailand to travel with a baby or toddler.

  • ๐ŸฆŸ Mosquito repellent is recommended, especially in the early morning and late afternoon

Final Thoughts: Visiting Krabi with Kids

Ao Nang is our favorite place to stay in Krabi with kids. The town is compact, the beaches are calm, and itโ€™s an easy base for exploring nearby islands and places like Railay. Railay Beach was absolutely wonderful for us: easy to reach, stunning scenery, and perfect for young kids to play. Next time, we might even consider staying at Railay for a night or two.

The islands around Krabi, like the Four Islands or Hong Island, are also breathtaking and ideal for family day trips. With a mix of easy beaches, short boat rides, and family-friendly restaurants, Ao Nang works really well for families with little ones.
