Kuala Lumpur is a very easy place to start a Malaysia itinerary with young kids because most international flights arrive here and activities are close together and simple to combine in one day. We often planned a short city outing in the morning, like visiting the Petronas Towers, followed by playground time at KLCC Park in the afternoon.

KLCC is the most convenient area to stay with kids thanks to playgrounds, shopping malls and easy access to the Petronas Towers and KLCC Park. Bukit Bintang is another good option if you prefer restaurants and walkable evening streets within easy reach.

💡 Crew Tip: if your budget allows, choosing an apartment instead of a standard hotel room makes evenings much easier when traveling with young kids. Having a separate bedroom gives parents some quiet time after bedtime.

From Kuala Lumpur, the easiest way to continue this itinerary is a short domestic flight to Sandakan. The flight takes about 2 hours and taxis from Sandakan Airport reach Sepilok in roughly 20 minutes, making this a smooth transition into the rainforest part of your trip.

Sepilok is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to see orangutans responsibly with kids, which makes it a highlight of this Malaysia itinerary with kids. The area is compact, easy to navigate and surrounded by rainforest, making it a relaxed stop before continuing to the Kinabatangan River.

We have seen orangutans before in Sumatra and Kalimantan, but Sepilok was by far the easiest place to visit them with young children. The boardwalk trails are short, the main conservation centres are close together and everything can be combined in a relaxed half day.

Sepilok turned out to be very easy to visit with young kids. Most paths are short boardwalk trails, and we carried our children in a baby carrier without any difficulty.

At one point we even opened the toilet door and found a huge spider inside, which quickly convinced us to try the next building instead. Moments like that are part of visiting the rainforest, but overall the area still felt very accessible and relaxed to explore as a family.

During our stay in Sepilok, we focused mostly on visiting the conservation centres and exploring the surrounding rainforest boardwalk trails.

All major attractions are within a few minutes of each other, which makes it easy to visit multiple centres in one morning or afternoon with young kids.

Staying near the conservation centres makes visiting early in the morning much easier and keeps travel time short with children.

Family-friendly places to consider include:

• Sepilok Nature Resort – right next to the orangutan centre with spacious jungle chalets and very easy access to the feeding platforms
• Sepilok Forest Edge Resort – peaceful jungle retreat within walking distance of both conservation centres and a small pool for kids
• Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat – quieter rainforest setting with comfortable family rooms

If accommodation in Sepilok is fully booked, staying in Sandakan town is a practical alternative. We stayed in an apartment there ourselves, which worked very well with young kids thanks to supermarkets, restaurants and extra space.

Good options in Sandakan include:

• Sabah Hotel Sandakan for a green setting with a pool
• serviced apartments near the city centre for extra flexibility with early bedtimes

💡 Crew Tip: If possible, stay close to the conservation centres so you can arrive early before tour groups.

From Sepilok, the next step in this itinerary is a transfer to the Kinabatangan River. The journey usually takes about 2 hours and is often arranged as a shared minibus transfer through your Kinabatangan River lodge booking.

The road can be quite bumpy in parts, but the trip is straightforward and feels like a real transition from rehabilitation centres to deeper rainforest areas.

Transport is frequently included when you book a Kinabatangan River lodge stay. If not, your hotel in Sepilok or Sandakan can usually arrange a transfer for you as well.

We travelled by shared minibus ourselves, which worked well even with young kids.

A stay along the Kinabatangan River is one of the highlights of this Malaysia itinerary with kids and one of the best places in Borneo to spot wildlife from the water in a short stay with kids. Nowhere else in Malaysia is it this easy to spot wildlife like pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and hornbills from a small boat.

Because most activities take place on relaxed river cruises rather than long jungle hikes, Kinabatangan works surprisingly well even with younger children.

The Kinabatangan River is one of the easiest places in Borneo to experience real rainforest wildlife without needing long treks through dense jungle. Instead, most wildlife spotting happens from small boats, which makes the experience exciting but still comfortable with kids. Boat rides are short and usually calm, which makes them suitable even for younger children.

During our stay on the Kinabatangan River, each boat cruise felt different. This area is one of the best places in Sabah to spot members of the Borneo Big 5 in a relatively short stay: orangutans, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and hornbills.

Our river safaris usually lasted about 1.5 hours, which worked well with young kids. On some trips we were lucky to see elephants very close to the boat, but during other cruises wildlife was further away and it was sometimes harder to keep the kids fully engaged. Still, spotting proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and even an orangutan along the river made this part of the trip feel like a real jungle safari and definitely one of the highlights of our time in Borneo with kids.

Most activities here are organized through your lodge and included in your stay:

Most lodges organize two river cruises per day, typically at sunrise and sunset when wildlife activity is highest.

Because everything is arranged through your accommodation, planning this part of the itinerary is usually very straightforward for families.

Most lodges along the Kinabatangan River offer packages that include accommodation, meals and guided river safaris. These are usually booked as 2D1N or 3D2N wildlife stays, which makes planning this part of the itinerary very straightforward.

There are two common ways to arrange your visit:

Book directly with a riverside lodge

This gives the most flexibility if you prefer private transfers or custom safari schedules. Lodges like Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort and Borneo Nature Lodge allow you to choose your own package and arrange transport separately if needed.

Book through a tour operator

Many families choose a complete 3D2N Kinabatangan package with transfers included from Sepilok or Sandakan. This is often the easiest option with kids because everything is arranged in advance.

We booked our stay through Asia Green Travels, which worked very smoothly for our family.

💡 Crew Tip: A 3D2N stay usually gives the best chance of seeing elephants, as wildlife sightings change quickly along the river. We wouldn’t recommend staying longer than that with young kids, since most activities here are the river cruises themselves.

From the Kinabatangan River, the next step in this itinerary is a transfer by road to Semporna. The journey usually takes around 4 to 5 hours and is typically arranged directly through your lodge.

Although it’s a longer travel day, the route includes several opportunities to stop along the way for restrooms, snacks and short breaks, which makes the trip manageable even with younger kids.

The change from rainforest river safaris to tropical island scenery also makes this one of the most exciting transitions of the trip for children.

The islands near Semporna offer some of the best snorkeling and tropical island scenery in Malaysia, making them a perfect final stop in this Malaysia itinerary with kids. After the wildlife experiences along the Kinabatangan River, this part of the trip feels like a relaxed tropical reward with clear water, white sandbanks and easy island-hopping days.

Semporna offers a completely different experience from the rainforest areas earlier in this itinerary. Instead of river safaris and jungle walks, your days here are spent on boats exploring small tropical islands with shallow coral reefs and bright turquoise water. Many snorkeling spots are shallow and close to shore, which makes them suitable even for beginners and younger kids.

For us, this contrast made Semporna one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Snorkeling conditions are often excellent, and even short stops can reveal coral, reef fish and sometimes sea turtles close to shore.

That said, it’s good to know that most island-hopping tours are long shared boat trips. For example, during our visit to Bohey Dulang we had to wait several hours while other visitors completed the viewpoint hike, and swimming is not allowed there. With younger kids, it’s worth checking the exact tour schedule in advance or considering a private boat instead.

Most families explore the islands around Semporna on guided boat trips:

• 🏝 Visiting Bohey Dulang viewpoint in Tun Sakaran Marine Park
• 🤿 Snorkeling around nearby reefs and sandbanks
• 🐢 Watching for sea turtles while snorkeling
• 🌴 Relaxing on white-sand islands like Timba Timba

Tours are usually organized as fixed island routes (often called Tour A, B or C). These routes typically include two or three islands in one day. With kids, we found routes that include more beach stops and snorkeling time, such as Tour A or Tour C, the most enjoyable.

💡 Crew Tip: If you’re traveling with younger children, consider a private island-hopping boat for more flexibility and shorter waiting times between stops.

There are two main options when choosing where to stay near Semporna: overwater island resorts or hotels and apartments in Semporna town.

Overwater resorts are a very special experience and staying above the sea was one of the highlights of our trip. However, they are significantly more expensive, and if you plan to do several island-hopping tours during the day you may spend less time enjoying the resort itself than expected.

In hindsight, if we planned this trip again with young kids, we would probably choose to stay in Semporna town and book private island tours instead. This gives more flexibility, avoids long waiting times during shared boat trips and usually saves a significant amount of money compared to staying in an overwater resort. If your budget allows both, combining an island stay with private tours is of course the most comfortable option.

Staying in Semporna town is also easier with children because supermarkets, restaurants and tour departure points are all nearby, even though the town itself is not particularly scenic. Most island tours also depart directly from the Semporna harbour area.

Family-friendly places to consider include:

• Ang Lee Holiday Home 2 – spacious apartment-style stay that works well for families who want more room
• Sipadan Inn Service Apartments Semporna – comfortable family apartments close to the harbour for island-hopping tours
• Aloha Mabul Scuba Lodge (Mabul Island) – simple island stay close to coral reefs and snorkeling spots

After your stay in Semporna, the easiest way to continue your journey is a short transfer to Tawau Airport, followed by a domestic flight back to Kuala Lumpur. The drive takes about 1 hour and is usually arranged through your hotel.

This makes Semporna a smooth and relaxing final stop before returning to the city at the end of your Malaysia itinerary with kids.

If you’re deciding between Borneo or West Malaysia with kids, a West Malaysia itinerary can be a great alternative thanks to its stronger infrastructure and easier day-to-day logistics. Cities like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi offer a wide range of family-friendly hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, which makes traveling with younger children feel more predictable and flexible.

Travel days are not necessarily shorter than in Sabah, but connections are straightforward and facilities are easier to find along the way. This makes West Malaysia especially suitable when traveling with babies or families who prefer a slower-paced trip.

A typical 2-week West Malaysia route looks like this:

• 📍 Days 1–3: Kuala Lumpur – city highlights, playgrounds and easy sightseeing
• 🌿 Days 4–6: Cameron Highlands – tea plantations, cooler temperatures and short nature walks
• 🍜 Days 7–9: Penang – street food, culture and family-friendly attractions in George Town
• 🏝 Days 10–14: Langkawi or the Perhentian Islands – beaches, snorkeling and relaxed island time

This route combines culture, food and beaches and is often easier to plan with very young children. However, families who want to see wildlife like orangutans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants usually find Sabah in Borneo the more memorable experience.

This Malaysia itinerary works very well with toddlers and young children, but we would choose a slightly different route when traveling with a baby.

The wildlife part of this itinerary in Sabah (Borneo) includes multiple river cruises along the Kinabatangan River and long island-hopping days near Semporna. These experiences were fantastic with our children aged 3 and 4, but they are less flexible with a baby and often involve several hours on boats or waiting between stops.

Accommodation along the Kinabatangan River is also usually organized as fixed 2D1N or 3D2N lodge stays, which means there is less flexibility during the day compared to other destinations in Malaysia.

For families traveling with a baby, a West Malaysia route that combines Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi is usually easier to plan. These destinations offer shorter activity distances, better infrastructure and easier access to supermarkets, clinics and family-friendly accommodation.

If visiting Borneo is a priority, it’s still possible with a baby, but we recommend slowing the itinerary down and staying longer in fewer locations instead of following the full route described above. With some extra preparation and flexible planning around boat trips and transfers, this can still be a very rewarding trip.

We personally found this itinerary ideal once our children were a bit older and more comfortable with longer boat trips and wildlife excursions.

Yes, 2 weeks is enough for Malaysia with kids, but it’s also the minimum amount of time we recommend for this Kuala Lumpur and Sabah (Borneo) route.

With less than two weeks, the travel days between Sepilok, the Kinabatangan River and the Semporna islands start to feel rushed. In that case, it’s usually better to choose either West Malaysia or Sabah in Borneo instead of combining multiple regions.

If you have more than two weeks, you can comfortably extend this itinerary by adding destinations like Penang or Langkawi in West Malaysia, or places such as Kota Kinabalu or Kuching in Borneo.

Malaysia is a year-round destination, but the best travel months depend on which region you visit.

For this itinerary combining Kuala Lumpur and Sabah (Borneo), the best months are usually March to October, when sea conditions near Semporna are often calmer for island-hopping tours.

We followed this exact route in July and had mostly good weather overall. In Borneo especially, short but very heavy tropical rain showers are normal. At times we experienced intense rain that felt like it would last all day, but often the sun returned within an hour. Being prepared for sudden rain makes a big difference.

Even during rainy moments, our kids still enjoyed playing on the beach, so the weather rarely affected our plans.

Destinations in West Malaysia such as Penang and Langkawi are generally good to visit between December and May, while the Perhentian Islands are usually best from March to September, because many resorts close during the monsoon season.

If you’re traveling with kids, the easiest strategy is to choose one region based on the season, rather than trying to combine both coasts in a single trip.
