While Cameron Highlands doesn’t offer the beaches of Langkawi or the wildlife experiences of Borneo, it adds a different side of Malaysia that many travelers would otherwise miss.

One of the things we loved most about Borneo was the variety. During our trip, we combined orangutans in Sepilok, river safaris in Kinabatangan and island-hopping adventures around Semporna. It became one of our favorite family trips in Southeast Asia.

While visiting Borneo requires a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur, the extra travel is well worth it for families interested in wildlife and outdoor adventures. For many visitors, it becomes the highlight of their Malaysia itinerary.

Malaysia is one of the easiest countries in Southeast Asia to visit with a baby or toddler. Compared to some neighboring destinations, you’ll generally find good infrastructure, reliable transportation and plenty of family-friendly accommodation.

During our own travels, we found Malaysia surprisingly manageable with young children. Whether exploring Kuala Lumpur, traveling through Borneo or taking domestic flights between destinations, we rarely felt limited by having kids with us.

For many families, Kuala Lumpur is the easiest destination to visit with a baby. The city offers modern shopping malls, changing facilities, supermarkets, healthcare options and plenty of family-friendly hotels.

Destinations such as Langkawi and Penang are also relatively straightforward, while more remote areas like Kinabatangan or the Perhentian Islands may require a little extra planning.

We traveled with both a stroller and a baby carrier and found that each had its advantages.

A stroller worked well in destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, airports, shopping malls and many hotels. However, a baby carrier was often more practical for boat transfers, nature walks and destinations such as Kinabatangan, Semporna and parts of the Perhentian Islands.

If you’re traveling with a young child, bringing both can offer the most flexibility.

Finding diapers, wipes, formula and other baby essentials is usually easy in destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and larger towns in Sabah.

However, supplies can be more limited in remote areas. If you’re heading to places like Kinabatangan, the Perhentian Islands or smaller islands around Semporna, it’s a good idea to stock up before leaving the nearest city.

We generally recommend carrying a few extra days’ worth of supplies when visiting more remote destinations.

One of Malaysia’s biggest advantages for families is its healthcare infrastructure. Major cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu have modern hospitals, international clinics and well-stocked pharmacies.

In most tourist areas, it’s easy to find pharmacies for basic medication, baby products and travel essentials.

Healthcare options become more limited in remote destinations such as Kinabatangan, the Perhentian Islands and parts of Semporna. For that reason, we always recommend bringing any essential medication, along with a small travel health kit for your family.

For many families, the biggest challenge is getting to Malaysia rather than traveling around the country itself.

Yes. Malaysia is generally considered one of the safest and easiest countries to visit in Southeast Asia with children, especially for families visiting destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Sabah.

Malaysia has good healthcare facilities in major cities and tourist areas, which adds to its reputation as a family-friendly destination.

During our travels, we felt comfortable exploring both Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian Borneo with our children. Like anywhere in the world, it’s important to use common sense, but most families are unlikely to encounter major safety concerns while traveling in Malaysia.

One of the biggest safety challenges in Malaysia is often traffic rather than crime. Roads can be busy in cities such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang, and crossing larger roads with young children sometimes requires extra attention.

Sidewalks are not always available or well maintained, so parents may occasionally need to walk alongside roads or navigate uneven pavements with a stroller.

Mosquitoes are present throughout Malaysia, particularly in rainforest areas such as Kinabatangan, Sepilok and other parts of Malaysian Borneo.

Mosquito protection is important for all travelers, especially because mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever occur in parts of Malaysia. In some remote areas of Borneo, malaria may also be a consideration, depending on your exact itinerary and current health recommendations.

We recommend bringing a good DEET-based insect repellent and applying it regularly, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Lightweight long sleeves and trousers can also help reduce mosquito bites.

Vaccination and malaria recommendations can change over time and may vary depending on where you’re traveling. Before your trip, it’s always worth checking the latest advice from your local travel health clinic, doctor or public health authority.

One thing we noticed during our travels is that baby cots and family rooms don’t always come with mosquito nets. If you’re traveling with a baby, you may want to consider bringing a portable travel mosquito net for extra peace of mind.

While mosquitoes shouldn’t stop you from visiting Malaysia, taking a few simple precautions can help make your family trip more comfortable.

Many of Malaysia’s highlights involve water. Whether you’re visiting the Perhentian Islands, Langkawi or Semporna, boat trips are often part of the experience.

We frequently found life jackets available for toddlers and older children. However, properly fitting baby-sized life jackets were much less common. If you’ll be spending a lot of time on boats with a young baby, it may be worth bringing your own infant life jacket.

As always, supervise children closely around water and make sure life jackets are worn whenever required.

Food hygiene standards are generally good throughout Malaysia, and we never found it difficult to find suitable meals for children.

As with any destination, use common sense when choosing street food. Freshly prepared food that is cooked in front of you is often a safer choice than food that has been sitting out for long periods.

Bottled and filtered water are widely available throughout Malaysia. We generally avoid drinking tap water and make sure children stay well hydrated, especially in the country’s hot and humid climate.

Malaysia can be visited throughout the year, but if you’re looking for a period that works well for most of the country’s top destinations, March to October is often the easiest choice.

During these months, destinations such as the Perhentian Islands, Tioman, Redang and Malaysian Borneo are generally at their best. Meanwhile, places like Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Cameron Highlands can be visited year-round.

The main exception is Malaysia’s west coast. Destinations such as Langkawi and, to a lesser extent, Penang often experience their most favorable weather between December and April, although both remain popular throughout the year.

Malaysia’s east coast is generally at its best between March and October.

This is when destinations such as the Perhentian Islands, Redang and Tioman offer their best conditions for snorkeling, diving and beach holidays. Sea conditions are usually calmer, visibility is often better and most accommodations are fully open.

During the northeast monsoon season, many resorts close and boat services may become limited. If you’re visiting between November and February, it’s usually better to focus on other parts of Malaysia.

The west coast can be visited throughout the year, but weather is often most favorable between December and April.

This is especially true for Langkawi, which is one of Malaysia’s most popular beach destinations during this period. Penang and Melaka can be visited year-round, making them flexible additions to almost any Malaysia itinerary.

If you’re traveling between December and April, a route through Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, Penang and Langkawi often works particularly well.

Unlike some of Malaysia’s island destinations, Kuala Lumpur and Cameron Highlands don’t have a strict travel season.

Kuala Lumpur can be visited at any time of year, although short tropical rain showers are possible in every month.

Cameron Highlands is also a year-round destination. Thanks to its higher elevation, temperatures are noticeably cooler than in the rest of Malaysia, making it a refreshing break from the tropical heat.

Destinations such as Sepilok, Kinabatangan and Semporna can be visited throughout the year.

Many travelers prefer the period between March and October, when rainfall is often lower and outdoor activities are less likely to be affected by weather. However, Borneo doesn’t have a strict travel season in the same way as the Perhentian Islands.

Rain is possible in any month, but wildlife experiences remain excellent throughout much of the year. During our own trip, we enjoyed incredible sightings of orangutans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants.

Malaysia combines particularly well with Thailand, especially if you’re planning a longer Southeast Asia adventure.

One of the easiest combinations is Langkawi and Koh Lipe, as the two islands are connected by ferry and can be visited during the same trip. This route works particularly well between December and April, when weather conditions are often favorable in both destinations.

A little preparation can make traveling through Malaysia with kids even easier. Fortunately, we found Malaysia to be one of the most straightforward countries in Southeast Asia for family travel, with good infrastructure, family-friendly facilities and relatively easy transportation between destinations.

Malaysia is one of the easiest countries to travel around in Southeast Asia. Compared to destinations such as Indonesia, travel distances are often shorter and transportation infrastructure is generally more developed.

During our own trips, we found it easy to combine domestic flights, Grab taxis, ferries and private transfers, even when traveling with young children.

🚕 Grab is widely available in cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu and was often our preferred way to get around as a family. It’s affordable, convenient and removes the need to negotiate taxi fares.

✈️ Domestic flights make it easy to travel between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. While destinations in Sabah are spread out, our Borneo itinerary mainly relied on road transfers between Sepilok, Kinabatangan and Semporna, meaning we only needed flights to get to and from Borneo itself.

⛴️ If you’re visiting islands such as Langkawi, the Perhentian Islands or destinations around Semporna, boat transfers will often be part of your trip.

If you’ve previously traveled through Indonesia with kids, you’ll likely find Malaysia’s transportation network easier to navigate and less time-consuming overall.

One thing that makes traveling around Malaysia even easier is having mobile data from the moment you arrive.

We typically use an Airalo eSIM for navigation, booking transport, checking opening hours and staying connected while traveling. Setting everything up before departure means you’re online as soon as you land.

Malaysia is warm and humid throughout the year, so lightweight clothing is usually the best choice. However, a few items can make family travel significantly easier.

Families visiting remote destinations may also appreciate a portable mosquito net, while those planning lots of boat trips with a young baby may want to consider bringing their own baby life jacket.
