Why visit Lombok with kids?
Lombok is a wonderful choice for families because it combines calm surroundings with plenty of things to see and do. The traffic is far less hectic than Bali, making it easier to get around with children. The beaches are spacious and often much quieter, which means kids can play safely while parents actually relax. On top of that, Lombok has good connections from Bali, child-friendly places to stay, and plenty of small adventures (from waterfalls to island trips) that are fun without being overwhelming.
Quick Summary: 5 reasons to visit Lombok with kids
Our experience traveling Lombok with kids
Our very first trip to Lombok was back in 2016, in our early days of travel. Back then, Kuta Lombok had just a handful of homestays and Selong Belanak beach was home to more cows than people.
Fast forward to today, we’ve returned twice with our kids. The island has changed a lot: there are now plenty of family-friendly places to stay, restaurants with kid-approved meals, and you can find almost everything you need for babies and toddlers. For us, traveling Lombok with kids has been a great experience. It’s not necessarily “better” than Bali, but it is definitely calmer, which makes family travel here feel much more relaxed. Our kids still talk about our bike trips on the Gili Islands, showing how much they enjoyed Lombok.

1. Quiet and easy traffic compared to Bali
One of the biggest advantages of Lombok for families is the calm and manageable traffic. Unlike Bali, you won’t deal with constant congestion or chaotic streets. This makes getting around with kids much easier and more relaxed.
On Bali and Lombok, we normally ride scooters just the two of us. With our kids, we never dared to do that on Bali because of the busy traffic. This year, however, we did ride a scooter with our children on Lombok for short distances. All four of us on one scooter, local style!

2. Beautiful and family-friendly beaches
Lombok is home to stunning beaches that are perfect for children. Wide stretches of sand, gentle waves, and often very few people make it easy for kids to play safely. Selong Belanak is especially great for kids, with relatively low waves and flat sand. It can be a bit busier now, but our children loved swimming, having lunch at Laut Biru and even napping on the beach. It was perfect for a few days of doing absolutely nothing.
For something more secluded, the secret Gili Islands in East Lombok are absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. (Check our Secret Gili Islands blog for details.)

3. Easy and convenient to visit Lombok with kids
Lombok is easy to reach, which makes it a great choice for family trips. The island has its own international airport, with direct flights from Bali (around 40 minutes), Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. This makes it simple to combine Lombok with other destinations without adding stress to your family travel plans.
If you prefer traveling by sea, ferries connect Lombok to Bali and the Gili Islands. We recommend Ekajaya Fastboat for a smooth and reliable ride, although waves can sometimes be high.

4. Child- and baby-friendly facilities
Lombok has developed plenty of child- and baby-friendly facilities, which makes traveling with kids much easier than during our first visit years ago. Back then, there were far fewer family-friendly hotels and restaurants, and finding baby essentials was more of a challenge.
Now, from hotels and villas with pools to restaurants offering kid-friendly meals, most places cater to families. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and baby supplies are easy to find across the island, so you don’t have to worry about what to bring.
During our stay, we found it really convenient to have everything nearby. The kids could enjoy their meals, we had easy access to baby supplies, and the accommodations often had little extras that made traveling with babies and toddlers much more relaxed.

5. Amazing nature and fun day trips for families in Lombok
Lombok is full of incredible nature and day trip opportunities that are perfect for families. From lush waterfalls to quiet beaches, there’s plenty to explore with kids. We loved visiting Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile waterfalls, both are stunning and not too challenging for little ones.
For those looking for more adventure, the Rinjani hike is an option. We haven’t dared it ourselves, not even before we had children, but it’s a famous trekking experience on the island.
Whether it’s a short excursion to a waterfall, a relaxing beach day, or just wandering through Lombok’s beautiful countryside, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained and create lasting memories.

Final thoughts on traveling Lombok with kids
Lombok is a wonderful destination for families, and we’ve always enjoyed visiting. The quieter pace, stunning beaches, waterfalls, and family-friendly facilities make it a relaxing and fun place for both parents and kids. Our children loved exploring, swimming, and discovering new spots, and we will definitely be returning for more adventures.
