Canggu with Kids: Should You Stay There?
Canggu can work well for families with older kids who enjoy surfing and a lively atmosphere, but it can be a harder fit with toddlers, mainly because of the traffic and rougher waves. We’ve stayed here twice with young kids, and while we liked the villas, family-friendly restaurants and the sheer number of things to do, we think there are easier places to base yourself with little ones. That said, we wouldn’t skip Canggu altogether.
Is Canggu a Good Match for Your Family?
For families, Canggu can be a good choice, but whether it works well for you depends on your children’s age and what you want from your Bali trip.
Canggu Could Be a Good Fit for Your Family If You:
- like having lots of restaurants and cafés nearby
- want a lively, active atmosphere
- prefer staying in a villa with a pool
- have older kids who enjoy waves or want to try surfing
- don’t mind using cars or taxis to get around
Canggu May Be a Harder Fit for Your Family If You:
- want calm, easy swimming for young children
- are traveling with a baby or toddler and a stroller
- want to walk easily between your accommodation, restaurants and the beach
- are looking for a quiet and relaxed beach base
For families with older kids, Canggu can be a fun and convenient base. With toddlers, we think there are easier places to stay in Bali.

What We Liked About Canggu with Kids
Canggu has a few things that make it particularly appealing for families, from family-friendly places to eat and play to comfortable villas and plenty of activities beyond the beach.
Canggu’s Family-Friendly Restaurants
One thing we really liked about Canggu is the huge choice of family-friendly restaurants and cafés. Many go beyond a kids’ menu, with playgrounds, kids’ activities and space for children to play.
We enjoyed Milk & Madu, where our kids got to make their own pizzas, which they absolutely loved. It also has a playground and regularly offers activities for kids.
Joon Canggu and Parklife are other good options. Parklife is particularly useful with younger kids as it combines a restaurant with indoor and outdoor play areas.

Plenty to Do Beyond the Beach
One thing we liked about Canggu is the variety of things you can do with kids. You don’t have to spend every day at the beach, and there are enough different options to keep a family busy for several days.
You can mix and match depending on your children’s age and what you feel like doing:
- Playgrounds and play spaces: Canggu has several indoor and outdoor places where younger kids can play and burn off some energy, including Mookiland (just outside Canggu) and Mai Main. Mookiland was one of our highlights. We spent a whole morning there and the girls happily played for hours.
- Family-friendly beach clubs: Places such as La Brisa and The Lawn offer a different way to enjoy the beach, with pools and spaces where kids can play. We really enjoyed our afternoon at La Brisa.
- Pools and family activities: There are also places where you can swim and keep the kids entertained without relying on the ocean. FINNS Recreation Club, for example, has a water park, pools and other family activities.
This variety means you can easily fill three or four nights in Canggu without planning a packed itinerary.

Modern Villas with Private Pools
We also liked the choice of modern family villas, many with their own private pool. With young kids, having a pool at your accommodation makes it easy to have a relaxed day without needing to go anywhere.
Many villas also offer more space than a typical hotel room, which can make family life a little easier.
The downside is that the nicer family villas can be quite expensive, especially in the most popular areas. Still, a good villa with a private pool is one of the things that makes Canggu appealing to families.

What Makes Canggu More Difficult with Kids
Canggu has plenty going for families, but there are a few things that can make it more challenging, especially with younger children. Traffic, limited sidewalks, surf beaches, and nighttime noise were the main things we noticed during our stays.
Canggu’s Traffic Can Be Crazy
The biggest downside for us was the traffic. Canggu can get seriously congested, and distances that look short on a map can take much longer than expected.
We experienced this ourselves when we returned from a trip to Tanah Lot. What should have been a relatively short drive back to our villa took around an hour just to get through Canggu.
With young kids, this is worth keeping in mind when choosing where to stay. Being close to the places you want to visit can make a big difference when traffic is this unpredictable.

Walking Around Canggu Isn’t Always Easy
Canggu isn’t the easiest place to get around on foot with young children. Some parts of Batu Bolong do have proper sidewalks, and we actually found the area around Milk & Madu surprisingly pleasant on our most recent visit.
Elsewhere, sidewalks can be limited or uneven, while scooters and cars are constantly passing by. This can make walking with a stroller or young children less convenient than in some other parts of Bali.

Canggu’s Beaches Are Nice, But Not Ideal for Young Swimmers
We actually really like Canggu’s black-sand beaches. We spent time on the beach with our kids, but with young children we mostly stayed on the sand and let them paddle with their feet rather than properly swim.
The waves and currents make these beaches better suited to playing in the sand, paddling with close supervision, or surfing with older kids than relaxed swimming with toddlers.
And this isn’t unique to Canggu. Seminyak and Kuta have similar west-coast surf conditions, so we’d take much the same approach there with young children.
If calm, easy swimming is a priority for your family, Sanur is one of the Bali destinations we’d consider instead.
💡 Crew Tip: We sometimes brought a small inflatable pool to the beach, which gave the kids somewhere to cool down and play without relying on the waves.

Some Areas of Canggu Can Be Noisy at Night
Canggu’s lively atmosphere can also have a downside when you’re traveling with kids. We once stayed in a villa near FINNS Beach Club where music could still be heard late into the night.
Luckily, our kids slept through it, so it wasn’t a problem for us. But it’s something we’d keep in mind when choosing a villa, especially if you’re staying near the busier areas.
If you prefer a quieter night’s sleep, it may be worth choosing a villa away from the main roads and beach clubs.
If You Decide to Stay in Canggu with Kids
If Canggu sounds like a good fit for your family, where you stay can make a big difference. Canggu is spread out, so choosing a villa in the right location can save you quite a bit of time in traffic.
We’d look for a family-friendly villa with a private pool, preferably within easy reach of the restaurants, activities or beach clubs you are most interested in.
Which Area of Canggu Is Best for Families?
There isn’t one single best area for every family:
- Batu Bolong is central and lively, with lots of restaurants, cafés and some more walkable streets.
- Berawa has plenty of family-friendly facilities and activities, making it a practical choice with kids.
- Pererenan is quieter and more relaxed, but you’ll generally rely more on a car or taxi.
For a first family stay, we’d choose based on what you want to have nearby, rather than simply looking for the “best” part of Canggu.

Visiting Canggu for a Day?
If you’re staying elsewhere in Bali, we wouldn’t necessarily skip Canggu. A day trip can be a great way to get a taste of Canggu without having to stay there.
This works especially well if you’re staying nearby, such as in Seminyak, or if Canggu fits into your route between two destinations. Just keep an eye on the traffic, because getting around can take longer than you’d expect.
We did this ourselves and had a really fun day with the kids. We spent the morning at Mookiland, had an afternoon at a beach club and on the beach, and finished with dinner at one of Canggu’s family-friendly restaurants.
The day was great. Getting out of Canggu? Not quite as much fun. We ended up sitting in a traffic jam for about half an hour just trying to leave the area.
So while you won’t see everything in one day, Canggu can definitely be worth a day trip with kids, especially if you’re staying nearby or passing through.

Final Thoughts: Canggu with Kids
For us, Canggu is a destination we’d enjoy visiting again, but it wouldn’t be our first choice with young kids. The traffic, limited sidewalks, and rougher waves make some parts of family travel more challenging than in other parts of Bali.
That said, we really enjoyed our stays here. The family-friendly restaurants, modern villas with private pools, and variety of activities made it easy to have fun with the kids, even when we weren’t spending much time in the ocean. Families with older kids, especially those who enjoy surfing and a livelier atmosphere, may find Canggu a much better fit.

The Little Passport Crew
Not particularly. Some streets, especially around Batu Bolong, have sidewalks, but they can be limited or uneven elsewhere. With a stroller, you may find it easier to use a car or taxi for many trips.
Canggu’s beaches are not the easiest places for toddlers to swim because of the waves and currents. Young children can still enjoy the beach, but we would stick to the sand and shallow water with close supervision.
It depends on what you are looking for. Canggu is busy and traffic can be frustrating, but the area also has plenty of family-friendly restaurants, villas, playgrounds, pools, and beach clubs. Families who prefer a lively base may enjoy it more than those looking for a quiet beach town.
Yes. Older kids may actually enjoy Canggu more than toddlers do, particularly if they like surfing, swimming, beach clubs, and active days. The area’s lively atmosphere and wide range of activities give families plenty of options.
Yes. A day trip works well if you’re staying nearby or passing through Bali. You can combine a playground or kids’ activity with a beach club or some beach time and finish with dinner at a family-friendly restaurant.
It can be, but traffic is an important consideration. Canggu’s location gives you access to many places in southern Bali, but journeys can take much longer than expected during busy periods. For families, staying closer to the places you plan to visit can make your trip easier.
