We visited Khao Sok before having children and found it stunning. On this particular trip with our one- and three-year-old, we chose not to go again because of the long travel time and full-day schedule.

It’s very much a nature and water-focused experience, rather than sightseeing from the boat like the James Bond Island tour.

When sea conditions are calm, it’s often the highlight of many trips to this region.

We actually came to Khao Lak mainly for this trip and had fully prepared ourselves for a long adventure day. Snacks were packed, extra water ready, even motion sickness tablets “just in case.” We were mentally ready for an early start and a full day with the kids.

Then the sea decided otherwise.

During our stay, conditions were quite rough and several tour operators strongly advised against going with small children. With a one- and three-year-old, it simply didn’t feel like the right moment.

So we did what traveling parents sometimes have to do: adjust the plan. The Similan Islands are now firmly on our “next time” list, ideally with calmer seas and slightly older kids.

Most family-friendly tours include hotel pickup, island stops and snorkeling time, making it an easy full-day trip when sea conditions are calm.
