Ubud is one of those places that often becomes part of a Bali itinerary with kids. It’s very different from the beach areas, which actually makes it a nice change during a family trip.
Instead of beaches and beach clubs, Ubud is known for rice terraces, temples and waterfalls. Let’s be honest though: most kids aren’t especially excited about temples or culture. That’s why choosing the right place to stay can make a big difference.

From our own experience, a few small details can make a big difference when staying in Ubud with kids.

- Nature means more insects – in quieter areas like Sayan or Kedewatan, you’re more likely to see geckos and mosquitoes
- Bring mosquito protection – especially for babies, as not all cribs come with mosquito nets. Bringing a lightweight travel cot can also be helpful
- Check room setups carefully – “family-friendly” doesn’t always mean a proper family room, so double-check bedding options

Penestanan is a quiet village just west of central Ubud and one of the most relaxed places to stay in the area. The neighborhood is known for its rice field views, small cafés and a slightly more laid-back atmosphere than the busy streets around the palace and market.
Even though it feels peaceful, Penestanan is still very close to the center of Ubud. Restaurants, shops and attractions are only a short scooter ride or walk away. This balance between nature and convenience makes the area appealing for travelers who want a calmer base while exploring Ubud.
💡 Crew Tip: If you’re staying near rice fields, keep in mind that they change throughout the year. We once booked a “rice field view” that turned out to be a muddy field during harvest season. It didn’t ruin our stay (and the kids didn’t care 😄), but it’s worth checking recent photos or reviews if the view is important to you.

Ubud Center: convenient but busy
Ubud Center is the busiest and most popular place to stay in Ubud. Everything is close together, from restaurants and shops to temples and markets, which makes it very convenient to get around.
That convenience is also the main reason many families choose to stay here, especially for shorter visits. You can easily walk to most places, and it’s simple to head back to your hotel during the day.
At the same time, this is not our personal favorite area to stay with kids. The center can feel crowded, traffic is often busy, and the atmosphere is much more hectic compared to the quieter areas just outside town.
For that reason, we usually prefer places like Nyuh Kuning or Penestanan. Still, if you value convenience and want everything within walking distance, Ubud Center can be a practical choice.

Personally, we prefer staying just outside the center. Areas like Nyuh Kuning or Penestanan give you a much more relaxed base, while still being close enough to explore Ubud easily. If you’re looking for something more unique or surrounded by nature, Sayan or Kedewatan can be a great fit.
That said, you can’t really go wrong with Ubud. It’s a great addition to a Bali itinerary with kids and offers a completely different experience compared to the beach areas.
