Ubud is one of those places that often becomes part of a Bali itinerary with kids. Itβs very different from the beach areas, which actually makes it a nice change during a family trip.
Instead of beaches and beach clubs, Ubud is known for rice terraces, temples and waterfalls. Letβs be honest though: most kids arenβt especially excited about temples or culture. Thatβs why choosing the right place to stay can make a big difference.
Luckily there are still plenty of things kids enjoy around Ubud. Waterfalls, short jungle walks and small cafΓ©s with play areas can easily fill a morning of exploring.
In the afternoon itβs often nice to slow things down again. Many family-friendly hotels in Ubud have beautiful pools and garden settings. After a morning trip, our kids are usually just as happy spending time swimming at the hotel.
Ubud also works very well as a base when traveling around Bali with kids. Many of the islandβs famous sights are nearby, and it creates a nice balance with the beach destinations later in the trip, especially if youβre planning to visit some of the best beaches in Bali with kids.
In this guide we share the best areas to stay in Ubud with kids and the family-friendly hotels that make exploring the region easier.

Practical tips for staying in Ubud with kids
From our own experience, a few small details can make a big difference when staying in Ubud with kids.
- Rice fields change with the seasons β some views can turn into muddy fields after harvest, so itβs worth checking recent photos or reviews before booking
- Nature means more insects β in quieter areas like Sayan or Kedewatan, youβre more likely to see geckos and mosquitoes
- Bring mosquito protection β especially for babies, as not all cribs come with mosquito nets. Bringing a lightweight travel cot can also be helpful
- Check room setups carefully β βfamily-friendlyβ doesnβt always mean a proper family room, so double-check bedding options
- Pools make a big difference β many afternoons are best spent relaxing at your hotel after a morning of exploring

Nyuh Kuning: quiet village near central Ubud
Nyuh Kuning is one of the most pleasant areas to stay in Ubud with kids. The village sits just south of the busy town center and has a noticeably calmer atmosphere. Small cafΓ©s, family-friendly restaurants and boutique hotels are spread along quiet streets lined with trees.
Even though it feels peaceful, Nyuh Kuning is still very close to central Ubud. Many restaurants, shops and attractions are just a short walk or drive away. That balance between convenience and a quieter setting makes the area especially comfortable for families traveling with young children.

π‘ Crew Tip: If youβre staying near rice fields, keep in mind that they change throughout the year. We once booked a βrice field viewβ that turned out to be a muddy field during harvest season. Many hotels in Sayan are more resort-style, often with larger grounds and swimming pools. This makes it easy to combine short trips around Ubud with time at the hotel, which works well when traveling with kids.

Ubud Center: convenient but busy
Ubud Center is the busiest and most popular place to stay in Ubud. Everything is close together, from restaurants and shops to temples and markets, which makes it very convenient to get around.
That convenience is also the main reason many families choose to stay here, especially for shorter visits. You can easily walk to most places, and itβs simple to head back to your hotel during the day.
At the same time, this is not our personal favorite area to stay with kids. The center can feel crowded, traffic is often busy, and the atmosphere is much more hectic compared to the quieter areas just outside town.
For that reason, we usually prefer places like Nyuh Kuning or Penestanan. Still, if you value convenience and want everything within walking distance, Ubud Center can be a practical choice.

Choosing where to stay in Ubud with kids mostly comes down to what kind of experience your family is looking for. Some areas are closer to restaurants and shops, while others offer more space, nature and a quieter atmosphere.
πΏ Nyuh Kuning is one of the easiest areas for families, with a calm setting just outside the center and plenty of cafΓ©s and restaurants within easy reach.
π΄ Sayan is a great choice if youβre looking for a more nature-focused stay, with resorts surrounded by greenery and a quieter feel.
π‘ Kedewatan works well for families who want more space and villa-style stays, often with private pools.
π Ubud Center is the most convenient, but also the busiest, and usually works better for shorter stays or families with older kids.
Personally, we prefer staying just outside the center. Areas like Nyuh Kuning or Penestanan give you a much more relaxed base, while still being close enough to explore Ubud easily. If youβre looking for something more unique or surrounded by nature, Sayan or Kedewatan can be a great fit.
That said, you canβt really go wrong with Ubud. Itβs a great addition to a Bali itinerary with kids and offers a completely different experience compared to the beach areas.

Yes, Ubud is a great place to stay in Bali with kids, especially if you want a mix of nature and culture. While itβs different from the beach areas, there are still plenty of family-friendly activities, and many hotels offer pools and spacious rooms that work well for families.
Staying in Ubud Center with kids can be convenient because everything is within walking distance. However, itβs also the busiest area, so many families prefer staying just outside the center in quieter areas like Nyuh Kuning or Penestanan.
The easiest option is a private driver with a car seat. For short trips, strollers or carriers work depending on the area. Grab is handy for food or short rides. Scooters are not recommended with small children.
Most families spend 3 to 5 days in Ubud. This gives you enough time to explore waterfalls, rice fields and nearby attractions, while still having time to relax at your hotel.
