For most families visiting Indonesia for the first time, Bali is the easier choice. The island offers more family-friendly hotels, restaurants, activities and facilities. Lombok is quieter and less crowded, making it a great option for families who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
Bali is usually the better choice when traveling with a baby. Baby supplies, supermarkets, pharmacies and healthcare facilities are easier to find across the island. Lombok is still very manageable with a baby but generally requires a bit more planning.
Lombok generally has the better beaches for families. Beaches such as Selong Belanak offer soft sand, gentle waves and plenty of space for children to play. Bali has beautiful beaches too, but many are busier and more developed.
If you have enough time, we recommend visiting both. Bali and Lombok complement each other well, combining family-friendly facilities, cultural attractions and activities with quieter beaches, nature and outdoor adventures.
For families wanting to visit both islands, we recommend at least 10 to 14 days. This gives you enough time to explore Bali’s main highlights while also enjoying Lombok’s beaches, waterfalls and island-hopping opportunities without feeling rushed.
