Where to Stay in Phuket with Kids: Best Areas & Family Hotels

We stayed in Kamala with our kids when they were 1 and 3, and really enjoyed how easy and relaxed it felt with young children. The beach, restaurants and everyday facilities are all close together, which meant we didn’t have to make every outing into a big production.

Kamala worked particularly well for us with a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old. The beach has soft sand and, when we visited, the sea was very calm with a gentle slope into the water and hardly any waves. There is also some natural shade around the beach, which is useful when you’re spending several hours outside with young children.

We liked how easy it was to combine a beach day with lunch. There are plenty of restaurants close to the beach, including places with high chairs and children’s options, and supermarkets nearby made it easy to pick up everyday essentials such as diapers and snacks.

We also found Kamala easy to manage with a stroller. The area around the beach is relatively compact, so it was convenient to walk between the beach, restaurants and nearby shops rather than constantly having to get a taxi.

💡 Crew Tip: Bring a few beach toys with you, or pick some up locally. One of our favorite things about Kamala was grabbing a drink at sunset while the kids played happily in the sand. Simple, but honestly one of those little family moments we remember most.

Kamala’s relaxed atmosphere is a big advantage for families with young children, but it won’t be everyone’s favorite.

Compared with Kata or Patong, Kamala is quieter and has less nightlife and entertainment. There are still plenty of restaurants, bars and things to do, but if your family likes having lots of activity right outside the hotel, Kamala may feel a little too quiet. For families with toddlers, though, we see this more as a benefit than a drawback.

Beach conditions also vary by season. During the drier months, Kamala is generally known for calmer swimming conditions, while the monsoon season can bring stronger waves and currents. Always pay attention to local beach warnings when swimming.

💡 Crew Tip: If your kids still nap, consider a pool-access room. We had one at Kamala Dreams, which meant we could relax by the pool while the kids slept in the room. A small upgrade that made a big difference for us.

Kamala has a good mix of family-friendly resorts and more affordable accommodation. A few options to consider:

We visited Kata with our kids and liked the combination of a beautiful beach, plenty of restaurants and lots to do nearby. Compared with quieter areas such as Kamala, there is simply more for older children to do, which can make Kata a better fit as kids get older.

One of Kata’s biggest advantages is how much there is to do around the beach. Older kids and teenagers can try surfing, while younger children can enjoy the sand and swimming when conditions are suitable.

There are also plenty of restaurants, cafés and shops nearby, so families have lots of choice without having to travel far for every meal or activity. Compared with quieter areas such as Kamala, Kata feels more lively and gives older children more opportunities to do things independently as they get older.

The beach itself is a big part of the appeal. It’s wide, sandy and spacious, with plenty of room for families to spread out. Kata is also one of the best places in Phuket to try surfing, with surf schools and lessons available right by the beach when conditions are suitable.

💡 Crew Tip: Keep one afternoon free for Dino Park Mini Golf if you’re travelling with kids who need a break from the beach. It’s close to Kata Beach and an easy option when everyone has had enough sun.

Kata is a good choice if you want more going on around your hotel. But that also means it is busier and more built-up than Kamala.

There is more traffic, more restaurants and shops, and generally a busier tourist atmosphere. If your ideal family holiday is mostly about a quiet beach, pool and early nights, Kamala may be a better fit.

For families with older children, though, the extra activity can be a real advantage. There are more options when the kids have had enough of the pool or beach, without needing to head into Patong for entertainment.

Kata has a good range of family-friendly accommodation, including larger resorts and more affordable options.

Karon is a good middle ground for families who want a large beach, plenty of space and a good choice of restaurants and family-friendly hotels without staying in the busier heart of Patong. Its long sandy beach gives families plenty of room to spread out, while the town behind it has restaurants, shops and other everyday conveniences.

Karon’s biggest advantage is space. The beach stretches for around 3 kilometres, so even when there are plenty of visitors, it has a much more open feel than a smaller beach.

Behind the beach, Karon has a good selection of restaurants, convenience stores, massage shops and other tourist facilities, making it easy for families to find what they need without having to travel into another part of Phuket.

It is also an area where the hotel can be a big part of the family experience. Several Karon resorts have large pools, water slides, kids’ clubs and other facilities aimed specifically at families. Phuket Orchid Resort, for example, has three pools, a children’s pool, a large water slide, a kids’ club and a playground.

That combination makes Karon particularly interesting for families with children of different ages. Younger kids can enjoy the beach and pools, while older children have more resort activities to keep them entertained.

Karon is more developed than quieter areas such as Kamala or Mai Khao, but it generally feels less entertainment-focused than Patong. The long beach and relatively compact town make it a convenient base for families who want a classic beach holiday with plenty of restaurants and things nearby.

One thing to keep in mind is the sea. Karon can have stronger surf during parts of the year, while the December-to-May period generally has calmer swimming conditions. Families with young children should therefore consider the season if beach swimming is a priority.

Karon has some particularly strong family-resort options, especially if pools and water activities are important to your kids.

Bang Tao is one of Phuket’s best choices for families looking for space, high-end resorts and plenty of family facilities. The beach stretches for around 6 kilometres, with the large Laguna Phuket resort complex at the northern end and a growing selection of restaurants, cafés and shops around the wider Bang Tao and Cherngtalay area.

Bang Tao stands out for its large family-friendly resorts and the amount of space available. The beach itself is around 6 kilometres long, so it feels much more open than some of Phuket’s smaller, busier beaches. During the high season, the water is generally calm, and the beach has plenty of room for families to spread out.

The area is particularly strong when it comes to family resort facilities. The Laguna Phuket complex includes several large resorts with kids’ clubs, pools and family activities, while other properties around Bang Tao offer everything from water slides and lazy rivers to spacious family rooms and pool-access accommodation.

Another advantage is the choice of places to eat. You’ll find restaurants and beach dining around Bang Tao itself, while Boat Avenue in nearby Cherngtalay has become a major dining and shopping hub, with restaurants, cafés, a market and a supermarket.

That combination makes Bang Tao particularly appealing if you want a comfortable resort holiday without being completely dependent on the hotel for food and activities.

💡 Crew Tip: If you’re travelling with young kids, look beyond the room itself and compare the resort’s pool and kids’ facilities. In Bang Tao, the right resort can be a big part of the holiday, especially on days when you don’t want to plan an outing.

Bang Tao is more spread out than areas such as Kata or Kamala. The beach, Laguna resorts and Cherngtalay/Boat Avenue are all part of the wider area, but they aren’t all right next to each other.

That means choosing the right hotel location matters. Some resorts are directly on the beach, while others put more emphasis on large pools, kids’ facilities or access to the Laguna complex.

For families who want a quiet, spacious resort with plenty to do on-site, this can be a big advantage. If you prefer to walk out of your hotel and immediately have lots of restaurants, shops and activities around you, Kata or Kamala may be more convenient.

Bang Tao has one of the strongest selections of family resorts in Phuket. A few standouts are:

  A family-focused resort with multiple pools, kids’ activities and direct access to Bang Tao Beach.
• 🎢 SAii Laguna Phuket – Best for pools & water activities
  A beachfront resort with a large lagoon-style pool, a 55-metre water slide and a supervised kids’ club for children aged 4-12.
• 🌴 Angsana Laguna Phuket – Best for a full family resort experience
  Part of the Laguna complex, with extensive family facilities including a large pool and kids’ club.

Mai Khao is a very different choice from Phuket’s busier southern beaches. Located in the northwest of the island, just a short drive from Phuket International Airport, the area is known for its long, quiet beach and large resorts.

It can be a particularly convenient option for families with a late arrival or early departure, or for those who prefer a peaceful resort stay away from Phuket’s busier areas.

Quick Overview: Mai Khao with Kids

• 👶 Best for: Babies, young kids & quiet resort stays
• ✈️ Location: Very close to Phuket International Airport
• 🏖️ Beach: Long, spacious and much quieter than Phuket’s southern beaches
• 💦 Kids: Splash Jungle Water Park is a major family attraction
• ⚠️ Consider: The area is spread out and has fewer restaurants and activities outside the resorts

Mai Khao is one of the quieter areas to stay in Phuket. The beach is long and spacious, with large resorts spread out along the coast rather than a busy beach town packed with restaurants and shops. That makes it appealing if your idea of a family holiday is a good resort, plenty of space and a slower pace.

The location is another advantage. Mai Khao is very close to Phuket International Airport, which can be particularly convenient when travelling with young children or arriving late at night.

For families who want plenty to do without leaving the resort, Splash Beach Resort is an interesting option. We stayed there between Christmas and New Year and were pleasantly surprised by how relaxed it felt, even during one of Phuket’s busiest travel periods. The resort has access to Splash Jungle Water Park, which we found clean and particularly good for kids, with lots of slides and play areas.

💡 Crew Tip: If you have a late flight, Splash Beach Resort can also work well for your last day. We were able to leave our luggage in storage and spend the day at the water park before heading to the airport, which made the journey home much easier with kids.

The main trade-off is that Mai Khao is much quieter and more spread out than areas such as Kamala, Kata or Karon. There isn’t a busy beach town right outside the resorts, although you will find some local restaurants and other facilities in the wider area.

The beach is beautiful and spacious, but swimming isn’t always the main attraction here. During the monsoon season, Mai Khao can have strong currents and rougher sea conditions, while swimming conditions are generally more suitable during the drier months.

For families who mainly want a peaceful resort holiday, however, the combination of space, quiet and easy airport access can be a real advantage.

If you love the idea of a beautiful beach without the busier atmosphere of Kata or Patong, Surin is worth considering. It sits between Kamala and Bang Tao and has a more natural, low-key feel, with soft sand, clear water in high season and plenty of shade from the trees behind the beach.

Surin is a good alternative if you don’t need the large selection of family resorts and activities you get in Bang Tao or Kata. The beach is the main attraction here, rather than a long list of things to do.

For families, the calm water during high season can make Surin a good choice with children. Outside the high season, conditions can become much rougher, so keep the season in mind if swimming is important to you.

The atmosphere around the beach has also changed. The beachfront restaurants and vendors were removed again in 2025, making Surin quieter and more natural than it used to be. There are still restaurants nearby, but you won’t find the old row of beach clubs and restaurants directly on the sand.

If your priority is a beautiful beach and a quieter setting, rather than lots of restaurants, entertainment and resort facilities, Surin can be a great alternative to the first five areas.

• ✨ Twinpalms Phuket – Best for a stylish resort stay
  An upscale resort close to Surin Beach, with pools, restaurants and a more sophisticated atmosphere.
• 🏖️ OUTRIGGER Surin Beach Resort – Best for a more affordable resort stay
  A more accessible option close to Surin Beach, with family-friendly facilities and easy beach access.

If you want a beautiful beach with a quieter, more natural feel, Nai Harn is worth considering. Located in southern Phuket, it feels less built-up than areas such as Kata or Karon, with green hills and a sheltered bay surrounding the beach.

Nai Harn is a good choice for families who want to spend plenty of time outdoors but don’t need lots of restaurants, shops and entertainment right outside their hotel. The beach is spacious, and the nearby Nai Harn Lake adds another pleasant spot for a walk or some time outside the sand.

The main trade-off is location. Nai Harn is further south and less convenient for exploring other parts of Phuket than Kamala, Kata or Bang Tao. If you mainly want a beautiful beach, a quieter atmosphere and a slower pace, however, it can be a great alternative.

Rawai is right next to Nai Harn in southern Phuket, but the two areas have quite a different feel. Nai Harn is the better choice if the beach is your priority, while Rawai is more about restaurants, local life, spacious accommodation and easy access to boat trips.

Rawai Beach itself isn’t a typical swimming beach. Longtail boats line the shore, but this is also what makes Rawai useful for families who want to explore nearby islands by boat. And when you do want a proper beach day, beautiful Nai Harn Beach is only a short drive away.

Rawai can therefore work particularly well for families looking for a villa or apartment with more space, especially if you’re staying for longer and don’t mind driving or taking taxis to the beach.

Patong is Phuket’s busiest and most developed beach area, with a huge choice of restaurants, shops, entertainment and hotels. For families who like having lots of options within walking distance, that convenience can be a real advantage.

It can also work well for a short stay or as a base for exploring Phuket, especially if you want easy access to restaurants and activities without relying on taxis for everything.

The trade-off is the atmosphere. Patong is much busier, louder and more commercial than Kamala, Kata or Karon, with a strong nightlife scene. If you’re looking for a relaxed family beach holiday, we’d choose one of the other areas first.

Choosing the right area makes a big difference to a family holiday. Kamala was our favorite with our young children, while Kata, Karon and Bang Tao may be a better fit depending on your family and the type of holiday you want.

The type of accommodation matters too. Resorts are convenient for families who want pools, breakfast and kids’ facilities in one place, while apartments and villas can offer more space, a kitchen and extra privacy.
